The Winter Of Discontent
Posted by emsquared at Sunday, June 22, 2008
It's easy to draw parallels with old Labour's predicament in the mid to late 70's and events that are transpiring now. Much is different but the echoes remain.Either way the events around the so-called 'winter of discontent' in Britain during 1978-79 are a matter of history and interpretation. In many ways the oil crisis of the early 70's along with a stagnating economy, rising inflation and an attempt to limit pay increases fuelled the growing number of strikes and large pay claims. As we enter a new challenging period as the spectre of rising inflation cast its shadow over a faltering British economy and talk again of limiting pay claims as prices rise and the credit crunch bites hard, it may be prudent to review how inflation ravaged Britain in the 70's.

My Own Desert Island Discs
Posted by emsquared at Wednesday, June 18, 2008
An entirely self indulgent experiment as to what music I'd want marooned with me on a dessert island. The original long running radio series of desert Island discs only allows five records but I've had to expand on that.As I created the timeline I was surprised at how little vocal or even pop music I was including but eventually a few managed to creep onto my shortlist.

Public information films. There are few of them around these days but were the nearest thing to an advert that could be seen on the BBC when I was growing up.I only learned last year that Kenny Everett was the voice of Charley the cat in the 'Charley says' public information films.

Banksy is the mysterious Bristol born guerilla artist who stencil work appears without warning in many places across the UK & further abroad. Banksy's work has become lucrative of late and his home town how specifically protects new works from being removed by their anti graffiti department whilst many of Banksy's works have often been removed elsewhere when classified as unwelcome graffiti. An entire piece on a brick wall was sold on eBay.
